Grade 2 Listed, Thomas Ellis Owen designed building constructed in 1851. It was originally built to provide housing at a cheap rate for the "respectable classes" of people in domestic service and trade. The building contains 23 flats and 1 shop.

The works are being carried out within an occupied building. The project is split into 3 separate phases to accommodate the decanting and movement of existing tenants. The existing flats provided limited accommodation with communal bathrooms.

The project includes the demolition of the redundant washroom and toilet wings and the construction of replacement three storey extensions providing greater accommodation.

The reconfiguration and remodelling of each flat provides modern accommodation each with its own kitchen and bathroom whilst retaining many of the original features.

The works involve complete refurbishment and modernisation of each flat, works to the communal areas with a new centralised heating system and complete rewire and new fire alarm system.

Associated repairs to the existing structure together with improvements to external works.

A negotiated contract with a client of long association.

A contract working on the Scholars accommodation housed in one of the oldest parts of the historic college. The buildings date from the 14th Century, are listed and include a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The phased works included the construction of a new extension to the College Chambers over the existing ancient building. The stonework and flint walls feature striking structural glass bay windows and a copper roof.

The works also involved the refurbishment and remodelling of the existing Chambers, bidet blocks and communal areas. Extensive mechanical and electrical works also included the installation of new fire alarm systems throughout Chambers and the adjacent Chapel.

“The contractors, R. J. Winnicott Ltd, worked throughout with considerable vigour, good humour and courtesy and appeared to relish the building difficulties presented by a construction of medieval origin. They impressed with engineering solutions developed on site in response to unforeseen challenges…” Alistair Land, Master in College, Winchester College.
